INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE STANDARD 3° TAPER PROP HUB
1. Cut or grind matching taper to prop hub on to crankshaft. Be sure to index off the prop hub to set taper at an exact measurement.
1a. Install small woodruff key in front slot. Fit hub to crankshaft paying attention to where hub hits woodruff key. Woodruff key will need to be filed off to fit slot in hub.
2. Taper should stop about .060" before the shoulder of the #4 bearing.
3. Lap the prop hub on to crankshaft either in lath or by hand.
4. Remove all valve grinding compound.
5. Install oil slinger. It should have 3 tangs bent forward. Do this by cutting 2 slots approximately 1/8" apart and bend the material in the middle of the slot forward.
You need 3 tangs 120° apart.
6. File small woodruff key to fit slot in prop hub - round corners of key.
6a. Install crankshaft's small woodruff key.
7. Install prop hub seal on prop hub. Install prop hub to crank.
8. Size bolt to length. Torque to 80 ft. lbs. Do not exceed or you may crack prop hub in key way slot.
9. Line up prop hub bolt with holes in prop hub. Install cotter key and bend end over to secure bolt.
10. Steel face plate should be painted to prevent corrosion.
Note: You cannot replace one manufacturer 3° taper prop hub with another. The taper will not match. A taper is measured in degrees and minutes. If the minutes are not exact, you will not have an exact fit.
Note: The prop hub bolt will need to be sized to the crankshaft. Measure length and cut to fit.
Note: If your propeller ever has a ground strike, however minor, it is imperative that you remove the prop hub and crankshaft to inspect the crankshaft key way and nose for cracks, and the prop hub key way for cracks. What can happen if you don't is this: the prop hub can roll over the key way if the propeller has a ground strike. If this happens, there is nothing to hold the prop hub from unscrewing on the crankshaft. Bye-bye prop hub and prop. Get the message??
