INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE GREAT PLAINS X CASTING
The X Casting is designed to fit the original Monnett pattern for the Sonerai I, II and IIS without having to re-weld the firewall when installing our 20 amp alternator.
Install the flywheel end piece, torque and re-measure the end play. Install correct shims,
rear seal and end piece - torque to 150 ft. lbs. Use a piece of angle iron with 2 each 1/4" holes drilled in it and bolt to the end piece to stop engine from turning when torquing end piece.
With right front cylinder timed at 28 degrees BTDC (before top dead center), place mag
drive hub (aluminum piece) on flywheel end piece, so that the drive tangs are as close as you can
get to the 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock positions. (May go as far as 2 and 8.) Place magnet ring
(gold) over the drive hub and secure with the 5 bolts provided.
Place the X Casting in place and bolt to the engine case. Time Mag, install phenolic mag
drive puck and install mag.
The regulator rectifier has 3 terminals on it. The 2 outboard terminals are labeled AC and
these are for the wires from the stator. The center wire is B+ and a wire goes from it through
an alternator on/off switch (not provided) to the positive bus bar or battery (+) positive.
When retrofitting to existing Sonerai's, the mag box will need to be made about 1.5
inches deeper. The intake manifold Y and 90 degree tubing will need some re-work to fit again also. This is because the X Casting is further back toward the firewall to allow for the
alternator installation.
