| 82mm Forged Crankshaft. |
| The only one like it made sepecifically for aircraft use. Crankshaft is made from a one piece billet of 4340 steel and machined by SCAT Enterprices to our specifications. Crank features a milled slot for crank gears instead of a woodruff key, the nose of the crank features a milled slot that is 180 degrees from the crankshaft gear slot. It also features a 1/2" fine thread prop hub retaining thread instead of the 20mm thread found on standard cranks. This thread is machined into the crank almost 3" and does not have any retaining threads for the first inch. |

Rods are sized for center to center length, contoured on the big end for clearance, honed on the I.D. for exact bearing fit and honed on the small end for an exact fit of the wrist pin. | "Points to Ponder" if you have been doing your homework on VW conversions, you may noticed that varied discussions have taken place in the last 20 years on crankshaft failures in VW conversions. We believe that 98% of the failures can be logged into 5 categories. Cast crankshafts, poor quality forged crankshafts, loose prop hubs, prop strikes, and overweight propellers. Cast cranks have a yield strength almost 10 times less than that of our 4340 forged crank. Poor quality aftermarket forged cranks have sulpher added to the crank to speed up the manufacturing process. This is the equivalent of swiss cheese (the holes) and results in a crankshaft that is not much better than a good quality casting. Loose prop hubs used to be a leading cause of failures. One manufacture had an application where the bolt could physically pass through the hub. Combined with a soft washer that would yield at 60 pound of torque and ouch! In our opinion any time you have a prop strike the crank and hub should be considered unusable for aircraft use again. In the last 3 years with advances in propeller manufacturing we have found the limits for VW propeller weight. About 6 pounds maximum weight and 100% wood only when driven off the pulley end. |
